We’ll be discussing Lois Lowry’s seminal work, The Giver.
In addition to a conversation about the book itself, we will touch on
why so many teens and tweens are attracted to dystopian fiction such as The Giver, The Hunger Games, and Divergent.
This choice also should lend itself to a conversation about Cultural
Literacy, and whether there really are certain books that everyone
should be familiar with. Do you agree that The Giver falls in that category? What other books would you feel the same way about?
"The Giver,
the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential
novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas,
who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and
contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver
of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind
his fragile community."
