PURPOSE of ALOED
The purpose of ALOED is to strengthen the teacher education program at Occidental College. This includes providing scholarships and a supportive networking community to students in Occidental's teacher credential program. ALOED also serves to provide alumni with networking opportunities, online resources for communication, and exposure to distinguished educational speakers.

Book Club: "Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain"

All ALOED alumni and friends are invited to this book club, where we'll discuss Proust and the Squid: the Story and Science of the Reading Brain by Maryanne Wolf. The author is a professor of child development at Tufts University and the director of the Center for Reading and Language Research. This is a fascinating book that combines science, history, culture, and linguistics as she probes the question of how reading has affected man's brain, and how the digital age will alter our development. She also explores the issue of dyslexia as the mother of a dyslexic child. It is an intriguing and intellectually challenging book. Dinner will be provided. Please RSVP online by October 31.
